The U.S. Justice Department has decided against launching a criminal civil rights investigation regarding the shooting death of Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. This decision marks a significant departure from prior governmental responses that typically instigated swift federal inquiries into such incidents.

While an FBI investigation remains active, lawyers from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division have been instructed not to engage in the inquiry at this time. The Deputy Attorney General indicated there is insufficient cause for a criminal civil rights investigation, although the rationale behind the decision remains unelucidated.

Federal officials assert that the ICE officer acted in self-defense, claiming Renee Good’s car advanced toward him, a move they label as domestic terrorism. Nonetheless, there are growing concerns regarding the pace of the investigation, with calls for a comprehensive examination of all relevant facts.

Concerns have surfaced among Minnesota state officials since federal authorities have restricted state investigators from accessing crucial evidence, contending that the state lacks jurisdiction in this matter.

This situation has resulted in several resignations of federal prosecutors in Minnesota, some of whom were linked to other significant cases. Such departures aggravate fears about potential political interference in Justice Department operations. Local leaders have voiced criticism over these resignations, emphasizing the necessity for prosecutions to remain impartial and free from political influence.

Traditionally, the Civil Rights Division has a notable history of promptly investigating police shootings to uphold justice and reinforce public confidence. For instance, in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis in 2020, the division initiated a federal investigation culminating in criminal charges and broader police reform.

The decision not to pursue a civil rights investigation into Renee Good’s death has left many community members feeling distressed, as federal involvement has often been crucial in ensuring thorough and unbiased reviews of law enforcement's use of force.
