Alyssa Healy, the seasoned 35-year-old Australian wicketkeeper-batter, has revealed that she will retire from international cricket, with the imminent series against India marking her final appearances for Australia. Healy, who assumed the captaincy following Meg Lanning’s retirement late last year, leaves an extraordinary legacy characterized by World Cup victories and stellar personal achievements.
As a cornerstone of the Australian women’s cricket team, Healy has played a pivotal role in securing two ODI World Cup titles and six T20 World Cup championships. In a moving statement released on Tuesday, she shared that while her passion for representing Australia remains intact, she no longer feels the competitive spirit that spurred her on, prompting the decision to retire.
Looking back on her career, Healy expressed her deep sense of loss for the camaraderie with her teammates, the joy of celebrating victories with the team anthem, and the honor of being an opening batter for her nation.
Since her debut in 2010, Healy has tallied an impressive 3,563 runs in ODIs, including seven centuries, while also accumulating 3,054 runs in T20 internationals with one century. Behind the stumps, her record boasts 275 dismissals, solidifying her status as one of the premier wicketkeepers in the sport.
The Chief Executive of Cricket Australia commended Healy as one of the greatest players in history, underscoring her significant contributions both in her play and her presence off the field during her remarkable 15-year tenure. Healy's outstanding career stands firm, separate from her notable cricketing family, including her uncle Ian Healy, a former wicketkeeping great, and her husband, Mitchell Starc, a renowned Test bowler.
As she has already stepped back from T20 internationals, Healy will participate in her last international matches in a series comprising three ODIs and one Test match against India, scheduled for February and March. Despite the expansion of women's cricket during her time and her impressive consistency—having missed just two games since her debut in 2011—this concluding Test will mark her only the 11th in the longer format.
Alyssa Healy’s retirement signifies the end of an era for Australian cricket, reflecting a legacy of exceptional skill, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the game.
