Oscar de la Renta Launches Emirati-Inspired Caftan in Abu Dhabi

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, the Design Commission Abu Dhabi (DCAD) is working to solidify Abu Dhabi’s status as a prominent center for sustainable luxury and cutting-edge design. This initiative promotes a creative economy that embraces advanced technologies and artificial intelligence.

The strategy undertaken by DCAD aims to position Abu Dhabi as a key player in the realm of globally recognized design intellectual property, while simultaneously developing homegrown materials and innovative textiles. The plan includes fostering a robust talent pipeline through various international residencies, specialized training programs, and capacity-building initiatives. These efforts are augmented by strategic partnerships and cultural showcases that highlight Abu Dhabi's growing influence in global design.

As a part of this ambitious vision, the renowned fashion house Oscar de la Renta will present an exclusive caftan, crafted in collaboration with DCAD, during its forthcoming Pre-Spring Collection Preview held in Abu Dhabi. This unveiling represents a significant milestone in the brand's regional engagement, showcasing a bespoke piece that marries Emirati culture with modern couture.

Inspired by the traditional Emirati thobe, this caftan embodies the cultural heritage and natural beauty of Abu Dhabi. The garment, available as a limited special-order item, features a stunning porcelain flower–printed silk georgette design layered with ivory silk georgette plumetis. It is intricately detailed with three-dimensional floral thread-work appliqué, blending Oscar de la Renta's iconic craftsmanship with regional cultural influences.

The collaboration is rooted in a memorable 2025 visit to Abu Dhabi by Laura Kim, Co-Creative Director of Oscar de la Renta. During her trip, she immersed herself in local art, architecture, and traditional Emirati attire, which all contributed to the caftan's unique design. The resulting piece is a luxurious reflection of both heritage and contemporary fashion.

Exclusively crafted for this event, the caftan will be available for special order during the Oscar de la Renta Pre-Spring Collection Preview at the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental in Abu Dhabi. Private viewings will take place from January 13 to January 15, 2026.
