Julian Assange Demands 20-Year Sentence for Spanish Spy

Post by : Saif Nasser

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has asked a Spanish court to sentence David Morales, head of a Spanish security company, to 20 years in prison. Morales is accused of spying on Assange on behalf of the United States.

Assange’s lawyers said Morales should be punished for secretly recording and sharing private information, bribery, money laundering, and illegal possession of weapons. The legal team said Morales passed information about Assange and other public figures to US authorities.

Assange, who spent seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London and five years in a high-security British prison, was released in June after a plea agreement with the US government. During his time in the embassy, Morales’s company, Undercover Global, managed security there.

According to the Spanish court, Morales installed new security cameras in 2017 that secretly recorded Assange’s private conversations. These included talks with his lawyers, family, and world leaders, including several Latin American presidents. Morales reportedly instructed technicians to set up real-time streaming systems, one for Ecuador and another for “friends of the United States,” who wanted Assange’s extradition.

The Spanish judge concluded that Morales acted with the intent to monitor Assange’s activities and pass the information to US authorities. Assange’s legal team argues that Morales and US officials coordinated the transfer of sensitive information in 2016.

The trial of David Morales is ongoing in Spain, and a decision on his sentence will be made in the coming months. Assange’s request for a 20-year term reflects the seriousness of the allegations and the broader concerns over privacy, espionage, and international political pressure.

This case highlights the ongoing legal battles surrounding Assange, who became a global figure after publishing classified US military and diplomatic documents through Wikileaks. It also raises questions about the role of private security firms in political and intelligence matters.
