Australia’s fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is grappling with a fresh injury, casting uncertainty on his availability for the third Ashes Test scheduled in Adelaide. Cricket Australia confirmed on Friday that Hazlewood, who was on the mend from a hamstring issue, is now experiencing discomfort in his Achilles, which has pushed back his full training timeline.
Hazlewood previously missed the initial Ashes Test in Perth and the second ongoing Test in Brisbane. After resuming bowling in the nets, there were hopes for his quick return; however, the new low-grade Achilles concern necessitates further rest before he can resume running and bowling next week.
Pat Cummins, the regular Australian captain, also sat out the first two Tests due to a back injury but is still a strong contender for the Adelaide match beginning on December 17. The Australian team deployed a relatively inexperienced pace lineup at the Gabba in Brisbane, featuring Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, and the seasoned Mitchell Starc, who, at 35, continues to lead the charge.
With Australia presently holding a 1-0 lead in the five-Test Ashes series, the selectors are paying close attention to Hazlewood’s fitness as they consider their options for the critical third Test. His absence could mean a heavier workload for the other bowlers, particularly Starc, making strategic planning vital ahead of the clash in Adelaide.
This development underscores the ongoing challenges Australia faces in managing injuries to key players without losing momentum in the Ashes, as fans and analysts remain watchful of Hazlewood’s recovery and the team's strategies moving forward in the series.
