Jess Naz's Season Cut Short Due to ACL Injury

Jess Naz's Season Cut Short Due to ACL Injury

Post by : Mara Rahim

Jess Naz, the forward for Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team, has been declared out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a severe ACL injury. The 25-year-old sustained the injury during a recent match against Aston Villa on Sunday and will require surgery on her right knee.

This marks Naz’s second ACL injury; she previously spent the entire 2019-20 Women’s Super League season on the sidelines after injuring the ACL in her other knee. Her absence is a significant setback for Tottenham, as she had been a regular starter in every WSL match this season. Additionally, she holds six caps for England and was included in the squad for recent games against Brazil and Australia.

Naz is not alone in grappling with this serious injury, as fellow England players Michelle Agyemang and Katie Reid also suffered ACL injuries earlier in the current season. This situation has led to increasing discussions among experts and athletes about the demanding match schedules. Recently, Keira Walsh of England and Chelsea called on football officials to heed players' concerns regarding fixture overload, which she believes contributes to the rising incidence of knee injuries.

Since the onset of the WSL season, multiple players have faced sidelining ACL injuries, including Agyemang, Maite Oroz, Marie Höbinger, Manu Zinsberger, Sophie Roman Haug, Jill Baijings, Reid, and now Naz. The expanding roster of injured players underscores the urgent need for enhanced player welfare, improved scheduling, and better injury prevention strategies in women’s football. As Naz embarks on her recovery, fans and clubs alike await updates, hoping she makes a strong return for both her club and country.
