Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has publicly supported his son Flavio Bolsonaro’s plan to run for president in 2026. He shared this message while staying in a hospital after a planned hernia surgery.
Doctors said the operation was successful and without complications. Bolsonaro was awake after the surgery and is expected to remain in the hospital for five to seven days for recovery.
Bolsonaro was allowed to leave prison for medical treatment after approval from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. He is serving a 27-year prison sentence related to a coup planning case linked to the 2022 election. Due to security concerns, police were stationed outside his hospital room, and electronic devices were not allowed inside.
In a letter read by Flavio Bolsonaro outside the hospital in Brasilia, Jair Bolsonaro said he was naming his son as a pre-candidate for the 2026 presidential election. He said the decision was meant to protect the will of the people and continue his political vision.
Flavio Bolsonaro, 44, is a senator and has said he wants to carry forward his father’s conservative ideas. He plans to challenge President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the October 4, 2026 election.
Jair Bolsonaro has faced several health issues over the years. He survived a knife attack during the 2018 election campaign and has since undergone multiple abdominal surgeries. Doctors said he may also receive treatment for long-lasting hiccups during this hospital stay, depending on his condition.
Bolsonaro was detained in late November after a court ruling and began serving his sentence shortly after. Despite being in custody, his political influence remains strong among supporters.
News of Bolsonaro’s support for his son surprised financial markets, as many expected him to support another political figure. After the endorsement became public, Brazil’s currency gained strength against the U.S. dollar.
This announcement places Flavio Bolsonaro at the center of Brazil’s political future as the country prepares for the 2026 election. The decision also shows that Jair Bolsonaro continues to play a strong role in national politics, even while facing legal and health challenges.
