In a striking display of bowling, Jacob Duffy achieved remarkable figures of 5-38, helping New Zealand dismiss the West Indies for a mere 128 on the third day of the second Test at Basin Reserve. This pivotal performance secured a comfortable nine-wicket victory, giving New Zealand a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Despite missing several key bowlers, including Blair Tickner, who suffered a dislocated shoulder on the opening day, the Black Caps managed to contain the West Indies to a low score, setting their batsmen a modest target of 56 runs. Devon Conway remained unbeaten on 28, while Kane Williamson chipped in with a not out 16, steering New Zealand to victory comfortably before tea, losing only one wicket in the process.
This match marked Duffy’s second consecutive five-wicket haul of the series, aided by Michael Rae, who delivered an impressive 3-45 on his Test debut at the age of 30, finishing the match with six wickets. Duffy commended Rae for his outstanding contribution, emphasizing it as a solid team effort.
The West Indies, who managed to secure a draw in the first Test, struggled significantly with their innings this time. Kavem Hodge emerged as their top scorer with 35 runs, while only two others managed to surpass the 20-run mark. Resuming at 2-32, the West Indies began cautiously, yet key wickets fell swiftly, including Brandon King being run out and Shai Hope caught off a delivery from Rae.
Duffy and Rae continued to dominate with the ball, claiming wickets at consistent intervals until Ojay Shields became the last man to be caught at fine leg. West Indies’ captain Roston Chase expressed his concern about the batting performance, noting the failure of players to capitalize on their starts throughout both innings.
The series is set to continue with the third Test commencing at Bay Oval next Thursday. With New Zealand now leading 1-0, the West Indies will need to showcase a remarkable performance to equalize the series, while the Black Caps, unbeaten thus far, approach the final match with growing confidence.
