On Wednesday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reached a significant milestone in its commercial space endeavors with the successful launch of the BlueBird Block-2 satellite for AST SpaceMobile, a US-based firm.
The satellite ascended at 8:55 am aboard ISRO’s heavy-lift LVM3-M6 rocket, departing from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Shortly after the launch, ISRO confirmed the spacecraft had been precisely positioned into its designated Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
Weighing in at 6,100 kg, the BlueBird Block-2 stands as the heaviest payload ever dispatched by ISRO’s LVM3, setting a new standard for the agency’s launch capabilities and enhancing India’s stature in the global commercial launch sector.
A Significant Advancement for ISRO’s Commercial Vision
This mission was carried out under a commercial contract between ISRO's commercial division, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and AST SpaceMobile. The successful launch underscores the increasing global confidence in India’s heavy-lift launch systems.
Previously, the record for the heaviest LVM3 payload was held by Communication Satellite-03, which weighed approximately 4,400 kg and was launched last November. The BlueBird Block-2 mission surpasses that weight comfortably.
Satellite Pioneering Smartphone Connectivity
AST SpaceMobile is venturing to create the world’s first space-based cellular broadband network capable of connecting directly to standard smartphones, eliminating the need for specialized satellite devices.
Once active, the BlueBird Block-2 satellite will facilitate 4G and 5G calls, video conferencing, messaging, streaming, and data services across remote and underserved areas, serving both commercial and government sectors and broadening global mobile reach.
PM Modi and Minister Praise ISRO's Achievement
Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the mission, declaring it a remarkable achievement for India’s space sector.
In a post on X, he stated that the successful launch exemplifies India’s advancement towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat and highlighted the contributions of Indian scientists and engineers to enhance the nation’s global status in space technology.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh also congratulated the ISRO team, noting that the agency is achieving “one success after another” under strong guidance.
Insights Into ISRO’s LVM3 Rocket
The LVM3, known as GSLV Mk-III, stands at 43.5 meters and is a three-stage launch vehicle created to transport heavy satellites and support human spaceflight missions.
It is powered by a cryogenic upper stage developed at ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre and includes two S200 solid rocket boosters from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre to deliver the necessary thrust at launch.
Previously, the rocket successfully executed significant missions like Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and several OneWeb satellite launches, reaffirming its reliability.
A Defining Moment for India's Space Landscape
The successful launch of BlueBird Block-2 not only showcases ISRO’s technical growth but also signals India's rise as a reliable partner in the global commercial space framework. With its heavier payload capabilities and proven reliability, the LVM3 is poised to attract more international clients in the future.
