Israel Recovers 51 Hostage Bodies in Gaza Amid Ceasefire Strain

The Israeli military has recovered the bodies of around 51 hostages during the two-year Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, intensifying tensions amid a fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that body parts returned by Hamas overnight actually belonged to a hostage recovered nearly two years ago, calling the act a “clear violation” of the ceasefire agreement.

The discovery has shaken confidence in the ceasefire deal, which has so far halted major fighting between Israel and Hamas since October 10. According to the Israeli military, there are still 13 hostage bodies believed to be in Gaza, but recovery efforts remain slow and complex. Hamas has claimed it is struggling to locate the bodies amid the widespread destruction in Gaza, while Israel accuses the militant group of deliberately stalling the return process.

Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized that Israel considers the return of dismembered remains both “inhumane and unacceptable,” adding that the violation could jeopardize the next stage of the ceasefire. The Israeli leader reaffirmed that Israel remains committed to recovering all hostages and ensuring accountability for the ongoing delays.

Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli forces carried out a military operation in the northern West Bank, killing three Palestinian militants near Jenin — a known militant hub. According to the Israeli police, the men were shot as they emerged from a cave. Two were killed instantly, and the third died shortly after being wounded. The military confirmed conducting an airstrike in the area to destroy the cave following the confrontation.

Hamas condemned the Jenin strike but did not identify whether the slain men were members of its group. The Israeli military claimed the operation targeted individuals involved in “terror activity” in Jenin but provided no further details.

Over the two-year Israel-Hamas war, the Israeli military says its operations have significantly weakened militant networks across Gaza and the West Bank. However, Palestinian officials and human rights groups argue that many civilians have also been killed, and tens of thousands have been displaced.

Since the ceasefire began, Israel has returned 195 Palestinian bodies to Gaza in exchange for the remains of Israeli hostages. Fewer than half of those returned bodies have been identified. On Monday, 41 unidentified bodies were buried in Deir al-Balah, Gaza, while in Israel, a funeral was held for slain hostage Yossi Sharabi, whose remains were returned earlier this month.

In a coordinated effort, Egypt has deployed teams of experts and heavy machinery to assist in the search for the remaining hostages’ bodies. The recovery operations are currently focused in Khan Younis, one of the hardest-hit areas during the war.

The Israel-Hamas ceasefire, which began on October 10, brought temporary relief to both sides. As part of the agreement, the last 20 living hostages were released to Israel, while approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners were freed. Most of those prisoners had been detained without charge during the conflict, and around 250 were serving long sentences for deadly attacks on Israelis, according to Israel’s Justice Ministry.

Despite these exchanges, the return of mutilated remains has cast doubt over Hamas’s intentions and reignited fears of renewed conflict. With both sides trading accusations, the fragile ceasefire now hangs in the balance, and hopes for lasting peace remain uncertain.
