In a significant military action, Israel executed multiple airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Thursday, focusing on strategic locations such as Jbaa, Mahrouna, Majadal, and Baraasheet, amidst rising tensions with Hezbollah, the Iran-supported armed group. The Israeli Defense Forces reported the airstrikes were directed at Hezbollah weapon storage sites, asserting that these sites are often hidden among civilian infrastructures.
This military escalation followed direct negotiations between Lebanese and Israeli civilians, marking a rare event in decades. These talks, which were facilitated by the UN peacekeeping team in Naqura, sought to reinforce the November 2024 ceasefire, intended to conclude over a year of conflict. Despite the ceasefire, Israeli armed forces have retained a presence in five crucial areas in southern Lebanon, continuing their air operations in recent weeks.
The brief visit by Pope Leo XIV from Sunday to Tuesday had previously moderated the frequency of airstrikes. During his stay, he called for an end to hostilities, highlighting the human suffering caused by the ongoing conflict. Yet, hostilities reignited on Thursday, with Israel indicating intentions to further target Hezbollah’s military assets in southern towns.
Local leaders reported severe damage to civilian properties, with Yassir Madi, a local official in Jbaa, expressing that “everyone is living in shock,” emphasizing that nearly every window within 300 meters of the strikes shattered. Residents recounted the airstrikes as a jarring reminder of the region's instability.
The Israeli military justified its operations, claiming that Hezbollah intentionally employs Lebanese civilians as human shields and continues to conceal munitions within populated areas. They asserted that their operations were precisely tailored to target terrorist infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s government has expressed intentions to disband Hezbollah; however, the group has consistently rebuffed these calls, heightening fears of growing Israeli military involvement. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced plans for another series of talks with Israeli officials slated for December 19, stressing the necessity for dialogue over conflict. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam reiterated that negotiations would focus on enforcing the ceasefire, securing the release of detainees, and ensuring a complete Israeli pullback from Lebanese territory.
International stakeholders are closely watching the situation. The United States has pressed Lebanon to manage Hezbollah and foster direct dialogue between both parties. US envoy Morgan Ortagus was present at the recent discussions, which also featured participation from France, the UN, and members of the ceasefire monitoring committee. France lauded the engagement, reaffirming its commitment to fostering de-escalation and stability in the region.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the discussions as “positive,” indicating a willingness to explore economic cooperation. Nevertheless, Israel stipulated that advancements hinge on Hezbollah’s disarmament. As the conflict remains tenuous, Lebanon and Israel are still deemed to be in a state of war since 1948, with both sides imposing strict limits on diplomatic movement.
These renewed airstrikes highlight the precarious state of peace in southern Lebanon, where civilian communities are suffering the brunt of military responses, while international entities strive to uphold dialogue and avert further hostilities.
