In a significant press briefing in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, joined by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, acknowledged Israel's awareness of recent military activities in Iran. However, he refrained from elaborating on the specifics of these exercises.
According to Iranian state media, missile drills were conducted in various cities throughout the country, marking a continuation of Iran's intent to enhance its ballistic missile capabilities.
Western nations have consistently perceived Iran's missile program as a major risk to Middle Eastern stability. These missiles are viewed not just as conventional armaments but also as potential platforms for nuclear warheads if Iran escalates its nuclear ambitions. Tehran has repeatedly asserted its commitment to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Over the last decade, Israel, Greece, and Cyprus have made strides to strengthen their alliance, primarily in response to concerns over Turkey's growing influence in the eastern Mediterranean. This partnership has fostered enhanced security and economic collaboration among the nations.
Netanyahu pointed out that despite Israel's "significant successes" during a recent conflict with Iran, the core expectations from both Israel and the United States concerning Iran remain unchanged. A pressing demand is for Iran to lower its uranium enrichment levels to prevent nuclear weapons proliferation.
In anticipation of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Netanyahu indicated that discussions would revolve around these issues, clarifying that Israel aims for stability and peace in the region rather than confrontation with Iran.
Furthermore, Netanyahu intends to address the next steps in Trump's Gaza initiative and the threats presented by Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group.
The leaders reached a consensus on enhancing security cooperation and unveiled plans for a substantial infrastructure project aimed at linking India to Europe via maritime and rail routes. President Christodoulides referred to this as a "southeastern gateway" connecting Europe with the Middle East and beyond.
There are also plans for developing an undersea power cable, which will integrate their electricity grids with those of Europe and the Arabian Peninsula, thus reinforcing energy partnerships.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis hailed Greece's emergence as an energy hub in southeastern Europe, especially in liquefied natural gas, stressing that interconnected projects are a high priority for the trilateral collaboration.
Following the conference, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen expressed to Reuters that the trilateral dialogue is essential in a climate where certain nations seem intent on destabilizing the region, although he did not specify which countries he was referencing.
