Iraq has entered the electoral silence phase as the parliamentary elections approach on Sunday, marking the end of political campaigning.
Starting Saturday morning, all political parties and candidates are prohibited from campaigning, ensuring that voters can enjoy a peaceful environment to contemplate their choices. The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) confirmed that special voting will commence at 7:00 AM, engaging over 1.3 million voters, which includes 26,538 displaced individuals.
This silence aims to foster a neutral atmosphere, free from last-minute promotions or political coercion. Authorities have warned that any infringement—such as campaigning during this period—will face strict legal repercussions.
Observers indicate that these measures are vital for ensuring fairness in Iraq's intricate political arena, enabling citizens to make well-considered decisions absent of external influences. For many voters, this quiet phase provides a necessary reprieve to concentrate solely on their electoral selections amidst usual campaign fervor.
With election day nearing, Iraqis are gearing up to take part in what many view as a crucial vote for the country's future, highlighting the significance of both adherence and public understanding during this final stretch of silence.
