Iran Withdraws from 2026 World Cup Draw Over Visa Issues

Iran Withdraws from 2026 World Cup Draw Over Visa Issues

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant development, Iran has declared its decision to boycott the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, attributing this to visa complications that barred its officials from entering the U.S. This announcement was made public on Friday by the state-run IRNA news agency.

Amir-Mahdi Alavi, spokesperson for the Iranian soccer federation, indicated that the visa issues are “beyond sports considerations,” reflecting existing tensions linked to broader political circumstances.

The delegation, which would include Mehdi Taj—president of the Iranian Football Federation and an influential figure in both Asian and global soccer—was set to participate in the draw scheduled at the Kennedy Center on December 5. Taj also plays vital roles in FIFA committees overseeing various competitions and men’s national team soccer.

This predicament arises in light of the Trump administration’s travel restrictions imposed in June, affecting citizens from numerous countries, including Iran and Haiti. Although exemptions were delineated for athletes and their close support teams attending major sporting events such as the World Cup or Olympics, it remains uncertain if these exemptions apply to the draw.

This situation casts a shadow over FIFA’s preparations for the inaugural 48-team World Cup, which is set to take place across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Iran's absence from the draw raises critical questions regarding the interplay of political and administrative challenges with global sports events.

FIFA has yet to release a statement on this issue, while the Iranian federation is reportedly seeking to engage with the organization, aiming for a constructive resolution.
