UPS Cargo Jet Crashes at Louisville Airport, Seven Confirmed Dead

Post by : Raina Nasser

An accident occurred at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport when a UPS cargo aircraft crashed shortly after departure, resulting in at least seven fatalities and 11 injuries. The type was identified as a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 built in 1991, bound for Honolulu when the mishap took place at about 5:15 p.m.

Video from witnesses showed flames erupting from the aircraft's left wing and a stream of smoke as it struggled to climb. The jet then burst into a large fireball near the runway's end, causing significant destruction to nearby structures, including a building whose roof was heavily damaged.

Authorities say four of the victims died on the ground; the condition of the three crew members aboard has not been confirmed. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said several people suffered serious injuries and described the scene as among the most violent he has seen.

UPS suspended operations at its Worldport hub — the company’s largest sorting facility — halting activities that support thousands of employees, more than 300 daily flights and sorting rates that can exceed 400,000 packages per hour. The pause disrupted standard package-handling operations at the site.

Louisville police announced the airport will remain closed until investigators and safety teams declare the area secure. Nearby businesses, including Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and an auto parts retailer, reported direct damage from the blast. Witnesses compared the area to a war zone, recounting loud explosions and thick black smoke visible for miles.

The National Transportation Safety Board has opened a full investigation into the crash. Early observations indicate the fire may have started near the left engine and could have spread to the aircraft’s fuel, but investigators will conduct a detailed probe to determine the exact cause.

The incident has left the Louisville community reeling as emergency services continue to support victims and families. Local officials and federal investigators are coordinating next steps in what has become one of the city’s most severe aviation emergencies in recent memory.
