A troubling surge in violence targeting minority groups in Bangladesh has been highlighted by the deliberate destruction of five homes belonging to a Hindu family in Dumritala village, situated in the largely Muslim district of Pirojpur. This act occurred on December 28, shortly after a brutal incident in Mymensingh district, where 29-year-old garment worker Dipu Chandra Das was viciously lynched and his body incinerated over blasphemy accusations.
Eyewitness reports indicate that most family members were away visiting relatives when the fire broke out. An elderly individual who remained behind witnessed flames engulfing one house. Despite efforts to alert nearby residents, the flames quickly spread to four other homes. Fortunately, there were no injuries or deaths due to the family’s absence. However, the fire caused extensive damage, destroying furniture, cash, essential land documents, educational certificates, and other vital personal items.
Authorities have yet to officially determine the cause of the fire. Early investigations suggest that assailants stuffed cloth into one room and ignited it, leading to the rapid spread to neighboring properties. Superintendent of Police in Pirojpur, Mohammad Manzur Ahmed Siddiqui, visited the scene and pledged a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible face justice.
This incident is part of a distressing trend of escalating violence against religious minorities, particularly Hindus, across Bangladesh. A recent report by the Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM) documented 71 blasphemy-related incidents targeting Hindus across more than 30 districts from June to December this year. These incidents often involve both physical violence and legal repercussions, frequently leading to mob justice and severe penalties.
Experts and human rights activists link this upheaval to rising religious conservatism and persistent political instability in the nation. Bangladesh, with a population nearing 175 million, has seen extremist groups take advantage of growing anti-India sentiments to justify assaults on minorities. The violence has notably intensified as the country approaches its upcoming elections.
Recent violent occurrences include the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh and the murder of Hindu individual Amrit Mondal in Rajbari town on December 24. While the government has denied communal motives in some instances, attributing them to unrelated criminal actions, the overall increase in attacks is alarming to human rights organizations and minority communities.
As national elections draw near, the safeguarding and rights of minority groups are pressing concerns, highlighting the critical need for political stability and protective measures for vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.
