Intel Refutes TSMC's Allegations of Trade Secret Breach

Post by : Raina Nasser

Intel has categorically denied claims that Wei-Jen Lo, a former senior executive, leaked trade secrets from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). This controversy has captured the attention of the global semiconductor industry, as both firms are pivotal in advanced chip technology.

TSMC has recently filed a lawsuit with Taiwan's Intellectual Property and Commercial Court against Lo, who spent 21 years at TSMC before retiring and joining Intel in October. The company has asserted that there exists a "high probability" that Lo may have communicated or transferred confidential information post-employment.

Responding on Thursday, Intel emphasized it has no basis for believing the accusations are valid. The firm reiterated its stringent policies that forbid the sharing or usage of confidential information from other organizations, underscoring the serious nature of these regulations.

Lo has yet to publicly address the allegations.

Intel spoke highly of Lo, labeling him a respected figure in the semiconductor sector, noting his leadership and technical prowess. The company further remarked on the customary and beneficial nature of talent transitions within the industry.

Before his tenure at TSMC beginning in 2004, Lo was part of Intel for 18 years, where he significantly advanced the development of cutting-edge chip technologies, notably the company’s 5-nanometer, 3-nm, and 2-nm manufacturing processes.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has expressed commitment to reviewing the situation to ascertain if any critical technologies were compromised or if national security statutes were breached.

The inquiry remains active, with additional updates anticipated as investigations progress.
