Johannesburg, South Africa – During the significant G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined India’s ambitious approach to several pressing global issues, including drug trafficking, health emergencies, and skill enhancement in Africa.
Addressing the plenary session focused on sustainable growth, Modi underscored the urgent need to confront the growing menace of drug-related terrorism. He stated, “In order to tackle the challenge posed by drug trafficking, particularly substances such as fentanyl, India proposes a G20 Initiative aimed at Countering the Drug–Terror Nexus. Our goal is to diminish the toxic relationship between drugs and terrorism,” he emphasized. This initiative seeks to incorporate financial, governance, and security measures to dismantle the linkages between drug networks and terrorist activities.
On health matters, he championed the establishment of a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team, envisioned to gather skilled medical professionals from G20 nations for prompt action during health crises or natural disasters. “Working collectively enhances our capabilities in times of health emergencies and disasters,” Modi asserted, stressing the necessity for international collaboration.
Highlighting the vital role of Africa in global progress, he proposed a G20-Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative aiming to train one million accredited skills trainers across Africa in the next ten years. “India’s commitment to Africa’s development has been steadfast. With Africa’s inclusion as a permanent G20 member during India’s presidency, our focus must be on capacity building in Africa’s skilled workforce,” he added.
Moreover, he unveiled plans for a G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository, which will collect and disseminate traditional wisdom from G20 countries to enhance global health and wellness. “India possesses a profound historical repository of traditional knowledge, and this initiative aims to share our collective wisdom for the betterment of all,” he explained.
These initiatives signify India’s strategic endeavor to tackle significant global challenges while reinforcing ties with various regions. Modi's comprehensive plans on drug issues, healthcare, and skill building illustrate a forward-thinking approach that highlights India’s influential role within the G20 framework.
