In a heart-wrenching incident, a 24-year-old Indian student has lost her life due to severe burn injuries sustained in a house fire in Albany, New York. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Indian community, while her relatives in India grapple with the painful news.
The victim, Sahaja Reddy Udumala, was enrolled in a Master’s program in Albany. The Consulate General of India in New York has expressed its sorrow, stating in a post on X that they are “deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Sahaja” and are providing support to her family during this challenging time.
Fire Rages Through Home
The Albany Police Department reported that the fire ignited on the morning of December 4. Despite the swift response of police and firefighters, the blaze had completely consumed the two-storey residence. Emergency teams learned that several individuals remained trapped inside.
Four adults were located in the building and received immediate medical attention before being transported to a hospital. Two required advanced treatment at a specialized burn center. Tragically, Sahaja, who suffered extensive injuries affecting nearly 90% of her body, could not be saved despite the best efforts of medical staff.
Authorities withheld her identity initially until her family was notified, and relatives later confirmed that the deceased was Sahaja Reddy Udumala.
Fundraising Efforts Underway
In response to the loss, her cousin, Rathna Gopu, has initiated a fundraiser to cover funeral costs, repatriation of Sahaja’s remains, and addressing urgent family needs. The fundraiser describes Sahaja as a bright and dedicated individual who ventured to the U.S. to realize her ambitions.
Gopu shared that Sahaja fought valiantly for her life after sustaining devastating burn injuries. Tragically, her health worsened, leading to complete organ failure.
“Sahaja was filled with aspirations and enthusiasm. Her unexpected loss has left our family heartbroken,” Gopu expressed. They are facing unforeseen emotional and financial hurdles while arranging to bring Sahaja back home.
The campaign has successfully raised over USD 109,000 towards a goal of USD 120,000, with generous contributions from friends, fellow students, and the Indian diaspora worldwide.
Consulate's Role in Assistance
The Consulate General of India is collaborating with local agencies and Sahaja’s family to ensure that all processes are handled efficiently.
The Indian community in Albany and across the United States has shown immense support and sorrow, memorializing Sahaja as a compassionate and warm-hearted individual who positively impacted many lives.
