India Closes Visa Centre in Dhaka Amid Heightened Tensions

Post by : Raina Nasser

India has temporarily closed its Visa Application Centre in Dhaka on December 17, 2025, in response to a surge in threats from extremist groups in Bangladesh. This decision arrives amid strained diplomatic relations and increasing anti-India discourse, as the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus seeks to strengthen ties with Pakistan. The situation highlights the precarious security dynamics in South Asia, drawing heightened global scrutiny toward regional stability and relations.

The Visa Application Centre located at Jamuna Future Park was officially closed at 2 PM on Wednesday, with applicants notified of their appointments' rescheduling. India operates 16 visa centres in Bangladesh, collectively handling over two million applications annually, with the State Bank of India overseeing the application process for the country.

The closure was precipitated by a formal diplomatic protest lodged by India with Bangladesh’s High Commissioner, Muhammad Riaz Hamidullah, in New Delhi. Officials cited incendiary speeches and threats against India’s sovereignty as primary concerns. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs underscored attempts by extremist factions to fabricate narratives aimed at destabilizing diplomatic relations.

In recent days, several Bangladeshi leaders made inflammatory comments targeting India’s northeastern states, suggesting that Dhaka would back efforts to destabilize India’s “Seven Sisters” region. These remarks came in the aftermath of an attack on student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, which anti-India elements exploited to intensify their rhetoric. India has categorically denied these allegations, asserting that it would never permit actions detrimental to Bangladesh’s interests from its territory.

This development has further complicated the already strained diplomatic relationships. Although India has fostered robust ties with Bangladesh historically, recent incidents underscore the ongoing challenges in navigating security and diplomacy. The Indian government has reiterated that missions and embassies must be protected in line with international standards.

Public and political responses in both nations are under scrutiny, with analysts warning that ongoing radical statements and protests could further escalate tensions, impacting trade, travel, and collaboration in the region. Although the visa centre's closure is temporary, it signifies India’s serious concern for the safety of its nationals and personnel in Bangladesh.

On a global scale, this incident highlights the repercussions of domestic political shifts on bilateral relations within South Asia. Timely diplomatic responses, regional security initiatives, and ongoing dialogue are essential to prevent any escalation of tensions. Observers emphasize the need for ensuring safe diplomatic engagements and maintaining open communication channels for regional harmony.

Recent updates suggest that India will persist in closely monitoring the situation in Dhaka and plans to engage diplomatically with Bangladesh in the near future. The reopening of the visa centre will largely hinge on assurances regarding the security of Indian personnel and installations from the interim government. This incident exemplifies the fragile interplay between diplomacy, security, and public perception in a region facing increasing volatility.
