Taking a significant step towards enhancing its maritime defense, India has entered into a Rs 7,995 crore (around USD 946 million) sustainment agreement with the United States for its fleet of MH-60R "Seahawk" helicopters. This arrangement, sanctioned by the Indian Ministry of Defence, focuses on bolstering operational readiness, optimizing maintenance procedures, and fostering greater interoperability between Indian Navy forces and their US counterparts in the crucial Indian Ocean.
The contract is designed to support 24 MH-60R helicopters, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, which were secured through a Foreign Military Sales agreement in 2020. To date, approximately 15 of these helicopters have been delivered to the Indian Navy. The MH-60R Seahawk serves multiple roles, ranging from anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare to surveillance and search-and-rescue missions, operable from naval vessels or coastal bases.
As reported by the US State Department, this sustainment package will enhance helicopter availability while minimizing maintenance time, thus ensuring efficient operations from naval stations and warships. Importantly, the initiative will also aid in developing local maintenance capabilities, reducing reliance on foreign entities and facilitating the seamless incorporation of the helicopters into India’s maritime strategy.
The advanced MH-60R is outfitted with sophisticated long-range sensors and weaponry, including AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, lightweight torpedoes, and machine guns. Its arsenal for anti-submarine tasks features dipping sonar, sonobuoys, multi-mode radar, and Mk-54 torpedoes, rendering it a formidable asset in countering submarine threats and safeguarding vital sea lanes.
Known as "Romeo," the MH-60R Seahawk sees widespread use within the US Navy and allied nations, fulfilling diverse responsibilities such as maritime surveillance, search-and-rescue, medical evacuations, and missions aboard ships. The Indian Navy's commissioning of its MH-60R squadron, INAS 334, at INS Garuda in Kochi, signifies a strong enhancement of India’s maritime defense posture.
This Rs 7,995 crore agreement represents a landmark in India-US defense relations, equipping the Indian Navy with advanced tools to secure its waters, counter threats, and uphold stability in the strategically significant Indian Ocean region.
