India Makes It Easier for Chinese Professionals to Work in Factories

Post by : Saif Nasser

India has introduced new visa rules to make it simpler for foreign experts, especially from China, to work in the country. This step is expected to help Indian industries that rely on Chinese engineers and technicians for machinery, factory operations, and training.

The government’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade said a digital system launched last month allows companies to create sponsorship letters online for foreign workers. The visa application process has been shortened, and additional approvals from government ministries are no longer needed, making the process faster and smoother.

The changes cover roles such as installing machinery, maintaining production lines, and commissioning factories. Many Indian factories, particularly in electronics and solar energy, depend on Chinese professionals to operate specialized equipment and guide local staff.

Visa restrictions had been tightened after a border clash between India and China in 2020, slowing the entry of Chinese professionals and causing delays in factory operations. Some Chinese companies, including Xiaomi, faced challenges in expanding in India. Analysts estimate that these delays cost Indian electronics makers around $15 billion over four years.

This move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China earlier this year and met President Xi Jinping, signaling a willingness to improve cooperation while maintaining careful oversight.

Business leaders have welcomed the reforms, saying that faster visa approvals will help factories function more efficiently, reduce skill shortages, and support expansion plans. The reform also strengthens India’s goal of becoming a global manufacturing hub amid rising global competition.

By streamlining visa rules, India is taking a practical step to balance economic growth and diplomatic relations, making it easier for skilled professionals to contribute to the country’s industries.
