India has received encouraging updates regarding the fitness of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, with both players showing steady improvement in their recovery. Bowling coach Morne Morkel expressed optimism about their potential return, although he stated that final confirmations will come from the medical team.
Gill has been sidelined for two weeks due to a neck injury he sustained during the Kolkata Test. Morkel recently conversed with him and was pleased to learn that the young batsman is progressing well. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, who has been out since sustaining a spleen injury during the Australia tour, has also commenced his rehabilitation. Morkel noted that it is promising to see both players gradually back in training as they work towards reentering the squad.
In the absence of Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to take his place in the ODI lineup. The more pressing concern is identifying a suitable candidate for Iyer’s critical No. 4 role in the batting order, with options including Rishabh Pant and Tilak Varma, each bringing unique skills. The final decision will hinge on current form, fitness, and the team strategy for the upcoming series.
Entering this ODI series, India faces considerable pressure, having lost five of their last seven home Test matches—an unusual occurrence for the team. Morkel highlighted that the players have reflected on their past performances and are ready for a mindset reset. Transitioning from red-ball to white-ball cricket typically fosters a fresh environment and renewed enthusiasm.
Morkel cautioned that South Africa is arriving with strong momentum, emphasizing the need for India to establish a strong start. He remarked that a confident South African team represents a significant challenge, urging the Indian players to maintain focus and discipline from the outset of the series. With the inclusion of experienced players, he believes the squad can turn the tide.
Among these experienced players are Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, appearing in international matches at home for the first time since their retirement from Test cricket earlier this year. Both are reportedly focused on the 2027 ODI World Cup, a notion Morkel strongly endorses. Drawing from his experience bowling against them, he commented on their formidable nature and potential for impactful performances.
During Friday’s training, India utilized two covered pitches, one designated for match day. Morkel observed that the pitch appeared lively, providing good pace and bounce, along with a distinct South African-like feel that may influence the team's selection for the opening ODI.
An ongoing discussion among the coaching staff revolves around whether to field fast-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy or spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar. Morkel noted that the final decision will depend on pitch conditions and collaborative discussions within the coaching group. He reiterated that while the surface looks promising, the ultimate choice will follow a careful evaluation post-training.
As India gears up for the series, the anticipated return of key players such as Gill and Iyer, alongside the experience of Rohit and Kohli, affords the team an opportunity to rebuild confidence and strive for strong performances in the upcoming matches.
