India and Israel Formalise Strategic Defence MoU to Expand Technology Cooperation

Post by : Raina Nasser

India and Israel have formalised a fresh phase in their defence relationship with the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation in Tel Aviv. The agreement was concluded during the 17th India-Israel Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on Defence Cooperation, co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Major General (Res.) Amir Baram, Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Defence.

The MoU sets out a shared policy direction aimed at deepening bilateral defence engagement. It establishes a broad framework for exchange of advanced technologies and promotes co-development and co-production across priority areas including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, defence innovation and research and development.

Both delegations reiterated their intent to strengthen operational capabilities and tackle common security threats, including terrorism. During the JWG session officials reviewed current projects and underlined the strategic value of sustained cooperation, particularly in joint innovation projects and industrial partnerships.

The ties between India and Israel are characterised by extensive defence collaboration and mutual trust; Israel continues to be a key partner in enhancing India’s military capabilities and supporting its modernisation programmes.

The announcement coincided with a visit by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar to New Delhi, where he held talks with India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. Saar described India as a "global superpower" and highlighted the expanding strategic and technological nexus between the two democracies.

Observers say the MoU signals a shift from conventional defence trade toward deeper technology-driven cooperation, reflecting a shared commitment to develop future-ready defence solutions amid an increasingly complex global security environment.
