Due to escalating concerns regarding former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health and the potential for unrest, the Rawalpindi administration has instituted Section 144 for three days across the district. The directive, issued by Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema and effective from December 1 to 3, prohibits public gatherings and imposes restrictions on various activities to ensure law and order.
This decision coincides with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) planning protests to demand access to their imprisoned leader. Khan has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail since August 2023, following a series of convictions he asserts are politically motivated. His family reports being denied visits for over a month.
The order explicitly forbids any assemblies, rallies, or demonstrations involving five or more individuals. Additionally, it bans weapons, slingshots, petrol bombs, and any items that could incite violence. The use of loudspeakers, hate speech, and pillion riding is also restricted. Attempts to breach police barriers or obstruct traffic regulations are similarly prohibited.
Authorities state that this precaution is based on intelligence indicating that certain groups may be mobilizing large gatherings and possibly targeting sensitive areas. The administration emphasized that these measures are vital to uphold public safety and prevent disturbances.
Meanwhile, Khan's sons have ramped up their demands for confirmed information regarding his well-being. In comments to Reuters, Kasim Khan revealed that the family has not received verified communication for months, despite a court endorsement for weekly visits. He described the situation as akin to “psychological torture,” expressing fears that critical aspects regarding their father's health may be withheld. He lamented the scarcity of “verifiable information.”
The increased security measures in Rawalpindi, coupled with uncertainties surrounding Khan’s health, have heightened the already charged political climate. PTI supporters continue to call for transparency and access to the former prime minister as the city braces for the unfolding situation.
