In a significant enforcement effort, police in Hyderabad have deported a Nigerian man who had been living in India illegally for over ten years. This operation, led by the Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) in conjunction with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), highlights the commitment of local authorities to tackling illegal foreign residency and its associated criminal activities.
The individual, 43-year-old Johnkennedy Chukwuemeka Okoro from Imo State, Nigeria, arrived in India in 2012 under a business visa. His subsequent years saw him moving between cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, though law enforcement confirmed that his visa and passport had expired long ago. Utilizing various aliases like 'Hopy Cup' and 'Jeksa', Okoro is suspected of embedding himself within local circles potentially linked to drug trafficking, acquiring what officials termed as “quick earnings.”
Acting on reliable intelligence, the H-NEW detained Okoro in the Asif Nagar area of Hyderabad. Although no illegal drugs were confiscated at the time of his arrest, authorities underscored that his extensive illegal stay and alleged criminal connections posed significant risks to public safety. After confirming his identity and arranging the appropriate travel documentation, he was sent back to Nigeria.
The H-NEW, created expressly to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse within Hyderabad, has been vigilant in tracking foreign nationals with expired visas who might be affiliated with illegal trafficking networks. Since its inception, the division has overseen the deportation of over 20 foreign nationals involved in illegal activities, with a considerable number of these cases emerging this year.
Official sources have stressed the importance of community involvement in ensuring safety within the city. Residents are encouraged to report any dubious activities or information concerning drug trafficking and unauthorized foreign residents. Parents are also advised to keep an eye on their children’s social interactions to mitigate potential exposure to narcotics.
This incident underscores the ongoing difficulties faced by Telangana authorities in balancing effective law enforcement with the supervision of long-term foreign residents who may seek to exploit legal loopholes for illicit gain.
