Mumbai Surgeon Explains How Long Dental Implants Truly Last

Post by : Saif Nasser

Dental implants are often seen as the best solution for people who have lost a tooth. They look natural, feel comfortable, and help patients smile with confidence. But one common question comes up again and again: How long do dental implants actually last? In a detailed conversation, Mumbai-based oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Nitesh Motwani shared clear and honest answers about the lifespan of implants and the steps needed to protect them.

He explained that dental implants are among the strongest and most reliable treatments in modern dentistry. According to him, when implants are placed correctly and cared for consistently, they can last 15 to 20 years, and in many cases, even a lifetime. This long life depends on good technique, strong bone support, and careful aftercare. Many patients keep their implants for decades without any problems.

Dr. Motwani described the two main parts of a dental implant: the implant fixture, which is the artificial root placed inside the jawbone, and the crown or bridge, which is the visible part of the tooth. The implant fixture is usually made of titanium or zirconia and bonds naturally with the jawbone through a process called osteointegration. Once this fusion is complete, the implant becomes stable and rarely fails unless affected by infection, bone loss, or injury. Research shows that 90 to 95 percent of implants survive even after 20 years.

However, the crown or bridge placed on top has a slightly shorter lifespan. Since it deals with constant chewing, temperature changes, and daily wear, it usually lasts around 10 to 15 years. People who grind their teeth or bite hard objects might need to replace the crown sooner.

Dr. Motwani also pointed out five major factors that can reduce the lifespan of implants. Poor oral hygiene can cause gum infection around the implant, leading to bone loss. Smoking slows healing and increases the chance of failure. Certain medical conditions like uncontrolled diabetes and osteoporosis can affect success. Heavy grinding or an uneven bite creates pressure that may loosen the implant. Lastly, the skill and planning of the surgeon also play a big role in how well the implant holds up.

To help patients protect their implants, Dr. Motwani shared practical steps that should become daily habits. He advised brushing twice a day, cleaning around the implant with interdental brushes or floss, and using an alcohol-free mouthwash if suggested. Regular dental check-ups at least twice a year help detect early problems and allow professional cleaning in areas that are difficult to reach.

People who grind their teeth at night should use a night guard to prevent pressure on the implant. Avoiding habits like chewing ice, biting pens, or using teeth as tools also reduces the risk of damage. Patients with medical conditions must keep them under control because stable health supports better healing and implant strength. He also encouraged reducing or quitting smoking, as it directly affects bone health. A balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, protein, and omega-3s helps maintain strong bone and gums.

Dr. Motwani warned that early signs of trouble should never be ignored. Bleeding while brushing, swelling, tenderness, a loose crown, bad breath, or a change in bite are all signals to see the dentist immediately. Early action can prevent small infections from turning into serious problems.

He ended with a simple message: dental implants last long only when both the dentist and the patient work together. With the right care, discipline, and regular follow-ups, implants can stay strong, stable, and attractive for many years. They are an investment in long-term dental health, and taking care of them ensures they remain a reliable part of one’s smile.
