A dramatic rise in antisemitism has taken place across Australia since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, leaving the Jewish community alarmed and fearful. The violence escalated after Hamas's attack that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis on October 7, 2023, which provoked a severe Israeli offensive on Gaza, leading to over 70,000 casualties according to health officials in the region. The uptick in antisemitic incidents has been directly linked to increased hostility towards Jewish Australians amid the conflict.
Victoria Teplitsky, age 53, a retired childcare center owner and daughter of a Holocaust survivor, has voiced her profound anger regarding the Australian government’s response to escalating antisemitism. In light of the recent Bondi Beach shooting carried out by a father-and-son duo, resulting in 15 fatalities, Teplitsky highlighted that the underlying hatred towards Jews plays a more crucial role than merely access to weapons. She pointed out that the attackers were “taught to hate,” indicating that antisemitism's systemic roots in Australia must be addressed beyond just gun control issues.
The assailants opened fire during a Jewish festival, leading to mass panic as attendees sought refuge before police intervened. Teplitsky criticized the government's inadequate measures to safeguard Jewish Australians, conveying a sense of neglect and insecurity within their once-safe haven. Her father, Semyon, 86, has suffered grave injuries from the shooting and is undergoing multiple surgeries, facing the threat of limb loss.
Over the past 16 months, the rise in antisemitic incidents has prompted Australia’s intelligence chief to label it as the nation’s top domestic threat. Teplitsky recounted incidents of vandalism and arson targeting synagogues, citing a 2024 attack in Melbourne that, while not deadly, sent a stark message to the community.
Internationally, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for insufficient action against antisemitism. Albanese defended his government's stance, reiterating a commitment to a two-state solution and announcing steps taken to combat hate, such as criminalizing hate speech, banning Nazi salutes, and enhancing security for Jewish groups.
While pro-Palestinian demonstrations have become routine in Australia since the conflict escalated, Teplitsky emphasized the critical need for confronting antisemitic sentiments that have adverse effects. She urged the government to swiftly prioritize the safety of Jewish Australians, working towards a comprehensive resolution to hatred and violence against minorities. The Bondi Beach incident has intensified urgent discussions regarding antisemitism and governmental responsibilities for minority protection in Australia.
The increase in antisemitic incidents in Australia highlights the critical necessity for stronger protective measures and heightened awareness. Experts caution that without immediate and effective actions, the Jewish community remains vulnerable, and it is imperative for society at large to address the rise of hate and intolerance.
