Gramma, the esteemed Galápagos tortoise and the oldest inhabitant of the San Diego Zoo, passed away at the remarkable age of around 141 years. She succumbed to health issues on November 20, closely linked to the natural challenges of her age.
Originally from the wild, Gramma made her way to the San Diego Zoo from the Bronx Zoo between 1928 and 1931, as part of the initial group of Galápagos tortoises. Throughout her extensive life, she endeared herself to visitors with her gentle demeanor and reserved nature. Gramma experienced a vast array of historical events, living through two World Wars and the tenures of 20 different U.S. presidents.
Affectionately referred to as “the Queen of the Zoo” by her caretakers, her later life was marked by bone-related health concerns, leading to the heartbreaking decision to end her suffering through euthanasia.
Gramma’s legacy resonates with visitors of all ages. Many fondly recall their childhood visits to see her and expressed their pleasure in later bringing their own kids to meet the renowned tortoise.
Galápagos tortoises are renowned for their impressive lifespans, often exceeding 100 years in the wild and nearly 200 years in captivity. Harriet, the oldest known Galápagos tortoise, lived up to 175 years at the Australia Zoo before her passing in 2006.
These tortoises represent 15 subspecies that are indigenous to the Galápagos Islands. Unfortunately, three subspecies are now extinct, while others face vulnerabilities or critical endangerment. Conservation efforts are actively in place, with thousands of juvenile tortoises bred in captivity and released into their natural habitat, instrumental in preventing the extinction of several subspecies.
Recently, there have been notable achievements in breeding Galápagos tortoises in various zoos, including the hatching of four baby tortoises at the Philadelphia Zoo and a 135-year-old tortoise becoming a father for the first time at Zoo Miami.
Gramma’s enduring life and gentle spirit will be cherished by all who had the privilege of meeting her. Her journey underscores the vital importance of conservation work for these ancient creatures and the ongoing efforts needed to ensure their survival for generations to come.
