London: Gopichand P. Hinduja, who led the multinational Hinduja Group and helped shape one of the world’s most prominent family-controlled conglomerates, has died in London at 85.
Widely referred to as “GP” within business circles, he was the second of four brothers who expanded the family enterprise internationally. His elder sibling, Srichand Hinduja, passed away in 2023; brothers Prakash and Ashok retain leadership roles across group interests.
Mr. Hinduja entered the family firm in 1950 and oversaw its growth from a modest Indo–Middle East trading operation into a diversified global group active in 11 principal sectors, among them automotive, banking and finance, information technology, healthcare, energy, real estate and media.
A product of Jai Hind College in Mumbai, he was later awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Westminster and Richmond College in recognition of his business achievements and philanthropic work.
Under his stewardship, the Hinduja Group became a flagship of Indian entrepreneurship internationally, with marquee holdings that include Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank and NXTDIGITAL Limited.
The Sunday Times Rich List 2025 placed the Hinduja family at the top of the UK wealth rankings, estimating their combined fortune at £32.3 billion.
The family has also faced public legal conflict: a high-profile 2021 dispute in London exposed internal tensions over succession and control. In court, Gopichand alongside Prakash and Ashok invoked a 2013 family accord that stated, “everything belongs to everyone and nothing belongs to anyone,” a phrase emblematic of their once-unified approach.
Gopichand P. Hinduja’s death represents the close of a significant chapter for a major global dynasty. He will be remembered for strategic vision, adherence to cultural values and his role in elevating Indian business on the world stage.
