With Delhi grappling with severe air pollution, health experts are urging citizens to prioritize their wellbeing. The dense smog filled with dust and harmful particles not only hampers normal breathing but also drains energy and induces fatigue. While many residents reach for a comforting cup of chai, a noted dietician from Delhi suggests opting for herbal tea instead.
Payal Sharma, a senior dietician at Dharamshila Narayana Superspecialty Hospital, asserts that herbal tea may prove to be a more beneficial choice than traditional chai, especially during this hazardous pollution period. She clarifies that while chai provides a quick energy boost due to caffeine, it lacks the ability to combat the adverse effects of pollution. In contrast, herbal teas can bolster the body’s detoxification process and enhance immunity.
Chai serves as a staple in many daily routines, enjoyed in the morning, at work breaks, or as a way to unwind after a taxing day. However, Ms. Sharma cautions about caffeine's dehydrating effects, which can lead the body to lose vital nutrients. Especially in a polluted environment, adequate hydration and antioxidants are crucial for maintaining health, rather than substances that exacerbate dryness or stress.
Herbal teas, derived from natural ingredients like tulsi (holy basil), ginger, turmeric, mint, and chamomile, are praised for their medicinal properties and ability to eliminate toxins. Ms. Sharma stated, “Herbal tea aids in detoxification, promotes lung health, and boosts immunity. Its caffeine-free nature ensures hydration and relaxation.”
During the pollution season, she recommends herbal teas rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components. Here are some potent choices:
Ms. Sharma explains how air pollution triggers the production of harmful free radicals that can harm cells. Rich in antioxidants, herbal teas assist in eliminating these radicals and shielding the body. Consuming 2-3 cups of herbal tea daily can enhance energy naturally and alleviate coughing, fatigue, and throat irritation stemming from smog exposure.
Additionally, she recommends maintaining ample hydration throughout the day and increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables, which provide essential vitamins and minerals to combat pollution’s detrimental effects. Reducing caffeinated beverages like coffee or strong chai is vital, as caffeine can heighten dehydration and stress levels.
While chai is not harmful in moderation, Ms. Sharma believes that substituting a few cups with herbal tea can significantly impact overall health during this period. “Individuals can gradually replace their evening chai with herbal tea. Once they notice improvements in energy and comfort, they can incorporate it more frequently,” she explained.
Health professionals in Delhi have been sounding alarms regarding pollution’s adverse effects on various organs, advising lifestyle modifications like consuming clean foods, exercising indoors, and opting for detoxifying beverages such as herbal teas.
In a city battling poor air quality, these minor adjustments could provide substantial benefits in safeguarding health and enhancing immunity. Herbal teas deliver warmth, comfort, and much-needed protection in times when outdoor air quality is concerning.
