Hamas Transfers Hostage Remains as Fragile Gaza Truce Persists

Post by : Raina Nasser

Cairo: Hamas’ armed wing said it would hand over the body of a hostage on Wednesday night, a move that highlights the precarious calm under a US-brokered ceasefire as intermittent clashes and air raids continue to test the arrangement.

The statement followed an Israeli military account that two Palestinians were killed after approaching an occupied area in what forces described as a "threatening manner." Gaza health authorities additionally reported a civilian death while collecting firewood, incidents that have increased tension despite the truce.

Since the ceasefire came into effect on October 10, Israel and Hamas have conducted a sequence of exchanges involving living hostages, detainees and bodies as part of the wider agreement. Hamas has released all 20 living hostages held in Gaza in return for nearly 2,000 Palestinian convicts and wartime detainees held by Israel.

Disputes remain over the recovery of deceased captives. Hamas says searching for bodies is hampered by the scale of destruction across Gaza, while Israel accuses the group of deliberately slowing the process.

Gaza health officials say 21 of the 28 hostage bodies buried in the enclave have been returned so far. Israel has, in turn, handed over the remains of 285 Palestinians killed since the conflict began in October 2023.

Though large-scale Israeli strikes have diminished notably, reports of sporadic shelling and air raids continue to emerge from across the Gaza Strip.

The reduction in violence has allowed thousands of displaced Palestinians to tentatively return to heavily damaged neighbourhoods and has improved the flow of humanitarian assistance into the territory.

Israeli forces have also pulled back from several urban positions, repositioning behind a yellow demarcation line that now loosely delineates areas of control.

The US-mediated ceasefire remains fragile, with both sides pressing Washington to ensure stricter enforcement and to curb further violations.

Humanitarian needs in Gaza continue to worsen even as the exchanges of prisoners and bodies create a narrow channel of interaction.

These prisoner and remains transfers provide a tenuous line of contact between the combatants — a fragile element helping to sustain the truce amid deep-rooted mistrust.
