In a development that has drawn sharp international attention, Hamas transferred the remains of an Israeli captive to Israeli military authorities on Monday, officials said. The handover represents the 16th of 28 bodies taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks and fuels criticism that the group has been slow to honour repatriation commitments under the fragile Gaza ceasefire.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the sealed coffin was received at the border, taken to a formal military ceremony and moved for forensic verification. “All families have been notified and our thoughts are with them at this painful moment,” the statement added, pledging that efforts to recover every missing person will continue until all are returned.
A Hamas official stated the remains were handed to the International Committee of the Red Cross for transfer to Israeli authorities. The move follows intensified demands from Israeli families and advocacy organisations that Hamas accelerate returns and meet its obligations under the ceasefire arrangements.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum urged Israel, the United States and mediators not to progress to subsequent negotiation stages until every captive is released. The group said Hamas “knows the locations of the deceased” and noted that two weeks have passed beyond the agreed deadline, with 13 individuals still unaccounted for.
Hamas rejected the claim that it knows the exact locations of all remains, saying extensive destruction from Israeli bombardment has hampered recovery operations. Spokesperson Hazem Qassem asserted the movement remains committed to completing the first phase of the truce while accusing Israel of looking for “pretexts” to resume hostilities.
The current crisis traces back to the October 7, 2023 assault in southern Israel, when militants abducted 251 people and more than 1,200 civilians were killed. Israel’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza has, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, resulted in in excess of 68,000 deaths.
In a limited sign of easing, Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz announced the lifting of the emergency declaration in border zones with Gaza for the first time since 2023. Nonetheless, humanitarian agencies warn conditions in Gaza remain critical and continue to press for expanded aid access amid restrictions at the Rafah crossing.
Reports indicate the United States is drafting a plan to deploy an international security force composed of troops from Arab and Muslim states to oversee the ceasefire. Israel has opposed involving Turkey, citing what it describes as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s adversarial posture toward the Israeli government.
Egyptian recovery teams and Red Cross personnel are coordinating searches for remaining remains alongside Israeli authorities. Despite the fragile truce, families continue to await answers, calling on all parties to prioritise humanitarian considerations above political aims as efforts to bring closure proceed.
