A 16-year-old boy from Halifax has been sentenced to four months of deferred custody alongside 18 months of probation after admitting guilt to several weapon-related charges. This arrangement allows him to stay in the community under strict oversight, akin to a conditional adult sentence.
The youth was taken into custody in the early hours of April 23 after he reached out to a suicide hotline, confessing feelings of depression, suicidal thoughts, and a fixation on school shootings. He expressed admiration for the infamous 1999 Columbine shooting and disclosed prior thoughts of attacking his school.
A police search of his residence uncovered firearms, ammunition, racially charged propaganda aimed at Black and Jewish individuals, a suicide note, and a list detailing individuals he sought to harm.
Initially confronting 33 charges, the teen eventually pleaded guilty to six counts of unauthorized firearm possession, one for careless storage of ammunition, and another for owning brass knuckles. Charges related to threats and hate promotion were dropped after a comprehensive review of the evidence.
The presiding judge remarked on the seriousness of the case due to the indication that “extreme violence was contemplated.” However, she also noted the adolescent's positive developments, as he had maintained his academic work and completed educational courses while in custody.
As part of his probation, the teen is prohibited from coming within 50 metres of Citadel High School, contacting certain students, accessing multiple social media platforms, and possessing weapons. He must also provide authorities with his internet browsing history.
Despite having previously ventured down a “sinister path,” the judge indicated that through ongoing treatment and structured supervision, he could create a brighter future.
