Bangladesh is grappling with escalating tensions as security measures ramp up for the funeral of Sharif Osman Hadi, a controversial anti-India leader whose death has sparked significant unrest across the nation. Hadi, shot by masked assailants in Dhaka, succumbed to his injuries in a Singapore hospital a week later. This incident has ignited protests, arson, and violent clashes in numerous cities, prompting the interim government to bolster security while urging citizens to remain calm.
A prominent spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha, Hadi played a critical role in the July uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Known for his anti-India stance, he had been involved in the dissemination of contentious maps depicting an imagined "Greater Bangladesh" that encompassed areas of India. He was attacked on December 12 after leaving Friday prayers, suffering a gunshot wound to the head. Following initial medical treatment in Dhaka, he was transferred to Singapore for further care, where he ultimately passed away.
In the wake of his death, violent demonstrations erupted in Dhaka and other locations, with extremist factions targeting media offices and cultural organizations, including Udichi Shilpigoshthi and Chhayanat, resulting in the destruction of valuable artworks and documents. This unrest has heightened concerns regarding safety and public order in the country.
As Hadi’s funeral approaches, security around the National Parliament Building in Dhaka has been intensified. Authorities have prohibited drone surveillance, restricted public access to the body, and advised attendees against bringing bags or heavy belongings. In accordance with the family’s desires, Hadi will be interred near the grave of esteemed national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Armed forces are present throughout the city to avert any further outbreaks of violence.
Law enforcement has released images of two individuals suspected in the assassination and is offering a reward of about $42,000 for leads. The interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, has vowed to take stringent action against those responsible while encouraging citizens to uphold peace. Nonetheless, violent incidents have persisted, including vandalism at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, targeting of a former ruling party office, and attacks against the Indian High Commission’s residence in Chattogram. The government has declared a day of mourning as Bangladesh seeks to regain stability amidst the upheaval.
