Fresh US–Russia Talks in Florida Aim to Find Path to End Ukraine War

Post by : Saif Nasser

Senior officials from the United States and Russia are meeting in Florida for another round of talks focused on ending the long and deadly war in Ukraine. The discussions come as the US government increases its efforts to push both sides toward a possible peace agreement.

The war began in February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, thousands of people have been killed, cities have been damaged, and millions have been forced to leave their homes. Nearly four years later, fighting continues along long front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine.

According to officials, US negotiators met with Ukrainian and European representatives on Friday, one day before sitting down with Russian officials. These earlier meetings focused on possible security guarantees for Ukraine if a ceasefire or peace deal is reached.

American officials said there has been some movement in talks with Ukraine and its European allies. However, it is still unclear whether Russia will accept any of the ideas discussed so far.

The Russian delegation is led by Kirill Dmitriev, a close representative of President Vladimir Putin. On the US side, the talks are being handled by Steve Witkoff, a businessman who has taken on a diplomatic role, along with Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. US Secretary of State and national security adviser Marco Rubio said he may also join the discussions.

Some of the earlier meetings between US and Russian representatives were held at Witkoff’s golf club near Miami, which has become an informal meeting place for these talks.

Despite ongoing discussions, major disagreements remain. US intelligence officials continue to warn that President Putin may still aim to gain control over all of Ukraine. This view challenges claims by some US officials who believe Moscow could be ready to consider peace.

Putin recently repeated Russia’s demands during a press conference in Moscow. He said Russia’s position has not changed since mid-2024. His conditions include Ukraine giving up its goal of joining NATO and withdrawing completely from four Ukrainian regions that Russia claims as its own.

Ukraine has strongly rejected these demands. Ukrainian leaders say they will not give up any land, especially areas that Russian forces have not been able to capture after years of fighting.

Ukraine’s top negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said talks with US and European officials were positive. He said all sides agreed to continue working together and to take further steps soon. Umerov also said he informed President Volodymyr Zelenskiy about the progress.

“We agreed with our American partners on the next steps and on continuing our joint work in the near future,” Umerov said in a message shared online.

A Russian source said there would be no direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators during the Florida meeting, showing that trust between the two sides remains very low.

Marco Rubio said that while some progress has been made, peace cannot be forced. He stressed that both Ukraine and Russia must be willing to make a deal.

“We can’t force Ukraine or Russia to agree,” Rubio said. “Our role is to see if there is any shared ground they can accept.”

Rubio added that he hopes a deal can be reached before the end of the year, but admitted that success is not guaranteed.

The Florida talks show that diplomatic efforts are still alive, even as the war continues on the battlefield. For people in Ukraine and beyond, the talks offer a small sense of hope. However, deep differences remain, and the road to peace is still long and uncertain.
