Alphabet’s Google has advised some of its employees holding U.S. visas to avoid traveling internationally because of long delays at U.S. embassies and consulates, according to a report by Business Insider. The warning was issued through an internal email sent by Google’s outside counsel, BAL Immigration Law, on Thursday.
The email highlighted that employees who require visa stamps to re-enter the United States may face delays of up to 12 months at some embassies. It cautioned that international travel under these conditions could result in a prolonged stay outside the U.S., which may affect work and personal plans.
The advisory comes amid increased scrutiny of the H-1B visa program, which is commonly used by technology companies like Google to hire skilled workers from countries including India and China. Earlier this year, the U.S. administration raised visa application fees and introduced enhanced vetting measures, including checks on applicants’ social media accounts.
Alphabet had previously advised its staff in September to remain in the United States and avoid overseas travel if they hold H-1B visas. The latest communication reflects growing concerns over visa processing delays that could disrupt work schedules and projects for employees in critical roles.
Google has not responded publicly to requests for comment. The company’s guidance underscores the challenges faced by tech firms in managing global talent while navigating complex and slow-moving immigration processes. Employees planning travel are being urged to carefully consider the risks and consult legal or immigration experts before leaving the country.
