No. 12 Gonzaga kicked off the Players Era men’s championship with an impressive 95-85 victory against No. 8 Alabama on Monday night in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs showcased energetic performances on both ends of the floor, demonstrating a well-rounded offensive attack with contributions from multiple players.
Graham Ike shone brightly, notching a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. His presence was felt consistently, providing crucial rebounds and scoring at critical junctures. Tyon Grant-Foster matched him with 21 points, infusing the Bulldogs with intensity during pivotal moments.
Braden Huff also made a significant impact, contributing 18 points with an accurate shooting performance of 9-of-12. His ability to finish plays around the basket enabled Gonzaga to maintain control, particularly when their offensive flow stalled. Steele Venters added 12 points, delivering four important 3-pointers that helped stretch Alabama’s defense. Additionally, Mario Saint-Supery contributed 10 points, stepped up to the free-throw line, hitting 10 of 11 attempts while providing six assists to facilitate smooth ball movement.
Alabama's standout performer, Labaron Philon Jr., led the Crimson Tide with 29 points and seven assists, keeping his team competitive throughout the match. He was supported by Amari Allen and Aiden Sherrell with 14 points each, while Aden Holloway contributed 13 points, including several timely hoops that ensured the game remained tightly contested.
The game was closely contested, with both teams exchanging leads. Alabama gained momentum with a sharp 10-0 run, featuring a 3-pointer from London Jemison, but Gonzaga responded with poise, regaining the lead as they shot confidently and executed smart plays.
A pivotal moment came late in the game when Grant-Foster executed a powerful alley-oop dunk following a feed from Ike, leveling the score at 71. Shortly after, he converted a fastbreak dunk to edge Gonzaga ahead, marking an 11-0 run that turned the tide in their favor. Grant-Foster capped off this surge with two free throws, solidifying their lead at 86-74.
Gonzaga excelled in rebounding, a critical factor in their success. They dominated the glass with 48 rebounds against Alabama’s 36, enabling them to secure 25 second-chance points. Their relentless pursuit of additional possessions was essential in this closely-fought contest.
Inside scoring was another advantage for the Bulldogs, who outpaced Alabama 52-42 in the paint. Adam Miller, who struggled in the first half, quickly contributed seven points along with a crucial 3-pointer that extended Gonzaga’s lead to 60-51.
Although Alabama briefly regained the lead with a corner 3-pointer from Holloway to make it 71-69, Gonzaga swiftly retook control, maintaining their lead for the remainder of the match.
In the next round, Gonzaga will face off against Maryland, while Alabama is scheduled to go against UNLV.
With excellent scoring, sharp defense, and a spirit of teamwork, Gonzaga reaffirmed why they are considered one of the nation's elite teams.
