In a surprising turn, Sanju Samson remained absent from India’s playing XI for the fourth time over the last six T20Is. Jitesh Sharma has been favored as the wicketkeeper-batter for the series opener against South Africa in Cuttack. While Samson has demonstrated substantial effectiveness as an opener since the last T20 World Cup, he was relegated to the middle order after Shubman Gill was secured as the top-order batsman.
This shift allowed Samson only five innings in the new role before his exclusion, with Jitesh selected for his match-finishing capacity and wicketkeeping skills.
Former players and experts have expressed skepticism surrounding this choice. Joy Bhattacharjya, former cricket team director, highlighted that maintaining Samson in the squad seemed illogical given Gill’s firm position at the top. He brought attention to Samson's remarkable record—comprising three centuries as an opener in the previous year—and questioned why a player of his caliber was shifted to an unaccustomed middle-order position. Bhattacharjya indicated that if a wicketkeeper-finisher was truly necessary, India could have considered players like Jitesh or Rishabh Pant.
Statistically, Samson boasts the second-highest strike rate (182.89) among Indian openers since 2023, accumulating 417 runs in 13 innings over the past two years, making a strong case for his effectiveness in the top order.
Former South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock also voiced sympathy for Samson, deeming his situation unfortunate. Pollock acknowledged that Gill is now perceived in the same realm as distinguished players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, naturally securing his opening position. He pointed out Gill’s successful partnership with Abhishek Sharma, which India is keen to maintain, complicating Samson’s path to regular inclusion in the side.
Ultimately, Samson’s exclusion seems to stem from strategic team considerations rather than a deficiency in form or ability. Despite his consistent performances, the current team dynamics keep him sidelined until a reshuffle occurs.
