Analysis: Gill Faces Scrutiny as India Eye Lead in 4th T20I at Carrara Oval

Post by : Mina Rahman

India's vice-captain Shubman Gill arrives in Australia under increasing scrutiny after a patchy run in the white-ball tour. The 25-year-old, who returned to T20 internationals at the Asia Cup 2025, has struggled to convert starts into consistent match-winning innings.

Across his last 10 T20I innings Gill has accumulated just 184 runs — an average of 23 and a strike rate of 146, with a highest score of 47. His ODI output on this tour has been limited to 43 runs in the three-match series, and heightened competition for the top order has intensified discussions about his place and role.

Ahead of the fourth T20I at Carrara Oval, Gold Coast, footage circulated showing India head coach Gautam Gambhir in a prolonged conversation with Gill during a training session. Shared by RevSportz, the clip fuelled speculation that the coaching team is addressing either technical adjustments or the batter's mindset.

Gill's scores in the current T20I series — 37, 5, and 15* — underline a lack of sustained rhythm, compounding the pressure. His sequence since the tour began reads 10, 9, 24, 37, 5, 15* and highlights a troubling lean spell for a player tasked with anchoring India’s top order.

On the broader T20I record, Gill has played 31 matches for India, scoring 762 runs at an average of 28.22 and a strike rate of 140.85, including one century and three half-centuries. His only sustained-looking innings on this trip came in a washed-out match at Canberra where he briefly appeared in good touch.

With the series poised at 1-1, India will aim to seize the advantage in Thursday's fourth match. For Gill, the fixture represents an opportunity to stabilise his place and reaffirm his credentials under the team’s new leadership.
