Ghazala Hashmi Sworn In as Virginia Lieutenant Governor, Hyderabad Connection Highlighted

Post by : Raina Nasser

Virginia has observed a notable milestone as Ghazala Hashmi took office as Lieutenant Governor, the first Muslim and first South Asian American to hold the post. Her elevation reflects increasing diversity within state leadership across the United States.

Born in India, Hashmi relocated to the United States with her family at age four in 1968. Although raised in America, she has kept a lasting affiliation with Hyderabad; roughly a decade ago she revisited the city and explored its heritage sites, including the Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace and the Salar Jung Museum.

Her cousin Rasia described the trip as deeply moving, noting Hashmi's evident attachment to relatives on both her paternal and maternal sides. The visit, Rasia said, demonstrated the strength of her familial bonds.

Hashmi travelled to Hyderabad accompanied by her elder daughter and participated in family gatherings, reconnecting with local customs while observing the city’s historical fabric.

Rasia also mentioned that the region’s fiery Hyderabadi cuisine stood out during the visit, adding a memorable sensory dimension to the trip.

In her role as Lieutenant Governor, Hashmi is anticipated to champion inclusive initiatives and collaborate on policies that address the needs of Virginia’s diverse communities. Her journey from Hyderabad to an American statewide office illustrates both determination and the continuing relevance of personal heritage in public service.

The outcome is welcomed by Indian-American communities and residents of Hyderabad alike, who regard her achievement as a source of pride and expect constructive engagement from her administration.
