Germany Outlaws Muslim Interaktiv and Widens Probe of Islamist Groups

Post by : Raina Nasser

German authorities have moved to outlaw the group Muslim Interaktiv, saying its activities posed a direct challenge to the country’s democratic institutions and human-rights standards. Officials simultaneously opened probes and conducted raids on two related organisations, Generation Islam and Reality Islam, in multiple federal states.

The Interior Ministry concluded that Muslim Interaktiv promoted antisemitic positions and discriminatory practices toward women and LGBTI+ people, while pushing for the supremacy of Islamic law over Germany’s legal framework. Investigators say the network exploited social media to reach young Muslims who feel marginalised, using digital platforms to spread its message and recruit followers.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt framed the action as part of a firm enforcement stance against any movement that seeks to erode constitutional protections or incite hatred. The ministry described the organisation as aiming to create enduring antagonism toward the democratic order and to weaken legal and social cohesion.

Search operations were carried out in several locations, including seven sites in Hamburg, a dozen in Berlin and various premises in Hesse. Hamburg’s interior minister, Andy Grote, warned about the group’s sophisticated online outreach, calling attention to its use of short-form social content to influence young audiences.

Counter-extremism specialists and activists welcomed the decision. Ahmad Mansour, a noted critic of Islamist radicalisation, said the ban was both necessary and timely, arguing that the organisation had become more confrontational and effective at mobilising youth through intimidation and online propaganda.

Officials said the move forms part of a wider campaign to counter violent and non-violent radicalisation, coming amid a period in which Germany has faced plots and attacks linked to both far-right and Islamist actors. Authorities emphasised their commitment to defend democratic norms, gender equality and minority protections.

Following the prohibition, the group’s web channels were reportedly taken offline. Representatives of Muslim Interaktiv were not reachable for comment.
