Fredericton's Initiative for Red-Light Cameras to Enhance Road Safety

Post by : Mina Rahman

Fredericton is moving forward with plans to install red-light cameras at four critical intersections aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic violations. This pilot initiative follows newly enacted provincial laws allowing municipalities to use automated traffic enforcement systems, including both speed and red-light cameras.

City officials have identified these intersections as frequent sites for T-bone accidents, primarily resulting from speeding and red-light infractions. The proposed locations for the cameras are Regent Street at Wayne Squibb Boulevard, Smythe Street at Prospect Street, Queen Street at Westmorland Street, and the intersection of Ring Road and Maple Street. The city plans to assess the camera placements after one year using collision data.

The red-light cameras are designed to photograph vehicles that disregard traffic signals, with police reviewing the evidence before dispatching tickets to the registered owners. Studies indicate that such cameras can lead to a reduction in fatal accidents at signalized intersections by as much as 21%.

Local residents, including Jeff Jardine, a victim of a 2016 red-light crash, are in favor of the plan. “If it helps in avoiding serious incidents, implementing red-light cameras is definitely worthwhile,” he commented.

While the expense of installing each camera can surpass $100,000, along with ongoing maintenance costs, city officials are assessing various funding options and revenue-sharing strategies to ensure the program’s success.

The city continues to evaluate proposals regarding this initiative and intends to announce comprehensive details as the pilot project progresses.
