2 Simple Rules from a Sleep Doctor to Fix Your Sleep Routine and Rest Better

Post by : Saif Nasser

Sleep is essential for good health. It affects mental clarity, physical wellness, and emotional balance. Yet, many people focus only on how many hours they sleep, forgetting that a consistent routine is equally important. Unpredictable sleep habits can prevent restful, restorative sleep and leave you feeling tired and groggy.

Dr. Christopher J. Allen, a physician specializing in sleep medicine and pediatric neurology with 20 years of experience, recently shared practical advice to improve sleep. He explained that two simple rules can help people fix their sleep cycle and rest better.

Rule 1: Wake up at the same time every day
Dr. Allen emphasized that waking up at a consistent time, even on weekends, is key. Many people sleep in on weekends, disrupting their internal body clock. By waking up at the same time every day, the body learns to be alert in the morning and sleep more soundly at night. This helps reduce morning grogginess and improves overall sleep quality.

Rule 2: Keep bed and wake times consistent
The second rule is to avoid large variations in bedtime or wake-up time. Dr. Allen advised that bed or wake times should not differ by more than 30 minutes. For example, going to bed at 10 pm one night and 1 am the next can confuse your internal clock. Such inconsistency can make it harder to fall asleep, cause frequent night awakenings, and reduce daytime alertness.

Following these rules consistently for a couple of weeks can retrain your body clock, leading to better sleep quality and more energy throughout the day. Predictable patterns help the body understand when to be alert and when to rest, making sleep more restorative.

In summary, achieving good sleep is not just about the number of hours you sleep but also about maintaining a regular sleep routine. By waking up at the same time every day and keeping bedtimes consistent, you can support your body’s natural rhythm and enjoy healthier, more refreshing sleep.

These simple but effective habits can make a noticeable difference in how you feel each day, helping you wake up energized and stay alert while improving overall wellbeing.
