In a troubling incident, two oil tankers in the Black Sea near Turkey were rocked by explosions, leading to the swift evacuation of their crews and heightened anxiety over potential attacks on vessels transporting Russian oil. Turkish officials confirmed that the Gambian-flagged tanker Kairos caught fire around 6:00 PM local time, approximately 28 nautical miles from the northern Kocaeli province coastline. Flames and dense black smoke were visible from the ship's bow, though no immediate signs of environmental contamination have emerged.
According to the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs, the fire aboard the Kairos, which was empty and en route to Novorossiysk in Russia, was attributed to external factors. All 25 crew members were successfully evacuated, and Turkish rescue teams were dispatched promptly. Meanwhile, a second oil tanker, also Gambian-flagged, named Virat, reported a strike roughly 35 nautical miles away, although the specifics of the impact remain undisclosed.
Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu indicated that these “external causes” could include attacks from mines, rockets, drones, or unmanned underwater vehicles. Both tankers have been under Western sanctions for carrying Russian oil amid the embargo initiated following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Rescue teams successfully reached the Virat, assuring the well-being of its 20 crew members. Officials emphasized that there were no health and safety risks for the sailors, and thus far, no oil spills or environmental threats have been observed.
This incident raises serious concerns about safety in the Black Sea, where naval mines from both Russian and Ukrainian forces have been a hazard due to shifting during storms in recent years. In response, NATO allies Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania formed a joint Mine Countermeasures Group in 2024 to oversee and mitigate such dangers.
The fires and explosions underline the ongoing risks vessels face in the area, particularly those transporting restricted oil, prompting increased vigilance among maritime authorities.
