FBI Dismisses More Agents Connected to Trump 2020 Investigation Amid Agency Overhaul

Post by : Raina Nasser

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has stepped up personnel changes, removing further agents and supervisors who were associated with the probe into former President Donald Trump’s attempts to challenge the 2020 election outcome.

These most recent dismissals unfolded despite interventions by senior federal prosecutors seeking to prevent at least some terminations. Sources say some agents received dismissal notices earlier in the week before the process was briefly paused after concerns from the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s office; the firings resumed soon after. Officials have not disclosed the full tally of those affected or explained the abrupt pauses and resumptions.

The moves form part of a broad reorganization driven by FBI Director Kash Patel, who has replaced numerous senior staff and agents tied to inquiries or actions viewed as critical of the Trump administration. In September, three former senior FBI officials filed suit against Patel, accusing him of politically motivated interference and a "campaign of retribution."

The FBI Agents Association has condemned the ongoing removals, describing them as disorderly and arbitrary, and warning that agents engaged in legitimate investigative work should not face termination. The group pointed to patterns of firing, reinstatement and subsequent dismissal as signs of internal disruption under current leadership.

These personnel shifts come amid renewed attention to the 2020 election investigation that culminated in special counsel Jack Smith indicting Trump. Republican lawmakers have intensified scrutiny of the Justice Department, alleging political bias and releasing FBI documents that reportedly include analyses of phone records linked to several GOP legislators.

Beyond the election-related probe, the FBI has also parted ways with agents and senior personnel for a range of reasons, including past resistance to political pressure, involvement in protests or public criticism of bureau actions. Such departures have contributed to heightened anxiety within the agency and strained internal cohesion.

Spokespersons for Director Patel and the D.C. U.S. Attorney declined to comment on the recent dismissals. Analysts warn the continuing shake-up could have lasting effects on the FBI’s operations, institutional credibility and internal morale.
