Kabul House Collapse Claims Eight Lives After Earthquake

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Kabul: A devastating earthquake struck Afghanistan on Friday, resulting in the tragic collapse of a residential building in Kabul, claiming the lives of at least eight individuals and injuring a child, as confirmed by local officials.

The National Disaster Management Authority reported that this unfortunate event occurred just after powerful tremors rocked the region, compromising the integrity of several structures.

The earthquake, recorded at a magnitude of 5.9, originated in the Hindu Kush region, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake occurred at a depth of around 177 kilometers, resulting in widespread tremors felt in neighboring areas.

Eyewitnesses described the intensity of the shaking, noting that it was perceptible not only within Afghanistan but also in Islamabad (Pakistan) and New Delhi (India).

Given its mountainous geography, Afghanistan is particularly susceptible to natural disasters such as earthquakes. It is estimated that such seismic events claim approximately 560 lives each year within the country.

In a related incident last November, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake resulted in 27 deaths and caused significant damage, leaving numerous homes in ruins.

Rescue and evaluation efforts are ongoing in the impacted regions, as authorities express ongoing concerns regarding the structural stability of buildings in areas prone to earthquakes.
