Indonesian Lawmaker Advocates for Prohibition on Israeli Passports

Post by : Shakul

A member of Jakarta's legislative council has called for a prohibition on the entry of Israeli passport holders into Indonesia, following a tragic incident involving United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon.

Lukmanul Hakim, representing the regional council, urged the government to take significant diplomatic measures after three Indonesian soldiers, serving within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), were killed during an attack in southern Lebanon.

The deadly event transpired on March 29 when Israeli artillery struck a UNIFIL base, further escalating the already heightened tensions in the region. This incident resulted in the loss of three Indonesian peacekeepers and left several others injured, prompting widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.

Hakim asserted that Indonesia should assert its sovereignty by prohibiting entry to Israeli passport holders, contending that this action would reflect Indonesia's dedication to international law and honor its fallen personnel.

Historically, Indonesia has refrained from formal diplomatic relations with Israel and has steadfastly advocated for Palestinian statehood within global forums. This recent tragedy has amplified public and political calls for a more assertive response.

Demands have been placed on President Prabowo Subianto to react decisively, while the government is also focused on repatriating the bodies of the deceased soldiers. Authorities confirmed that the fallen will be granted posthumous honors and their families compensated.

The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has been actively collaborating with UN officials to address the aftermath, including medical assistance for the injured peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon.

This attack has heightened concerns regarding the safety of UN peacekeeping missions in conflict zones, particularly in light of the ongoing hostilities involving Israel and various armed groups in the area.

As diplomatic tensions continue to climb, Indonesia is poised to evaluate its response thoughtfully, striving to balance its international commitments with domestic sentiments and its long-standing foreign policy approach.
