Family Remembers Youngest Victim of Bondi Shooting

Post by : Raina Nasser

On Thursday, the family of Matilda, the youngest victim of the Bondi shooting, shared a poignant message with the community. As they bid their final farewell to the 10-year-old girl, they encouraged people to embrace love rather than resentfulness.

Matilda was among 15 lives tragically lost when two gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney. The event horrified the nation, leaving countless families in mourning.

Details of the Incident

The tragic shooting unfolded on Sunday evening amid a peaceful gathering celebrating a religious occasion. Without warning, two assailants began firing into the audience, killing many instantly, including both children and the elderly.

This incident marks the deadliest shooting in Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which claimed 35 lives.

Heartfelt Eulogies at Matilda’s Funeral

Matilda's funeral service took place in Sydney on Thursday, attended by numerous supporters, community leaders, and grieving families.

During the service, Matilda's aunt, Lina Chernykh, conveyed the family's grief while encouraging attendees to remember Matilda for her joy and compassion.

She passionately urged everyone to honor her niece's memory by spreading positivity. "Transform your anger into love and joy in remembrance of my dearest niece," she said.
"I believe she is now an angel, sending good vibes to the universe."

A Celebration of a Beautiful Life

Mourners wore bee-themed accessories, reflecting Matilda's affinity for the creatures. The atmosphere was filled with sorrow, prayers, and moments of quiet remembrance.

Her parents, Michael and Valentyna, chose her name from the beloved song “Waltzing Matilda” as a tribute to Australia, which offered refuge to their Ukrainian family.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns recited a poem during the ceremony, stating,
"Now she is waltzing with the angels."

Community Mourning

A religious leader presiding over the service expressed deep sorrow, stating, "The cruel murder of young Matilda feels akin to losing our own child." He mentioned that, although words may not erase the pain, separation is not eternal.

Just the day before, he had buried a family member who also perished in the Bondi attack.

Matilda's aunt described the family's devastation.
"I can’t fathom how her parents will ever find happiness again," she shared. Matilda's younger sister, who was incredibly close to her, is left in confusion, stating, "She has no more tears to cry."

Remembering Another Victim

On the same day, the oldest casualty of the Bondi shooting, Alex Kleytman, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor, was laid to rest. He died defending his wife while celebrating his faith.

His family expressed that he passed while doing what he cherished most — standing up for his family and beliefs. Though his life was cut short by the assailants, they affirmed that his legacy would endure.

Official Investigations and Legal Measures

Authorities have classified the Bondi shooting as a terrorist act motivated by extreme ideology.

Reports indicate that the assailants are a father and son duo. The father was killed on-site, while the son has been arrested and charged with 15 counts of murder among other serious charges.

In response to this tragedy, the government has proposed stricter laws targeting hate crimes, including powers to revoke or deny visas associated with hate activities.
