Family Enterprises: Backbone of UAE's Economic Vision 2031

Family Enterprises: Backbone of UAE's Economic Vision 2031

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Family businesses play a pivotal role in the UAE's economy, contributing approximately 60% to the GDP and providing over 80% of jobs. They represent nearly 90% of all private-sector firms, underscoring their significance in fulfilling the ambitious goals of the UAE's ‘We the UAE 2031’ initiative, which seeks to elevate national GDP to AED 3 trillion.

A recent dialogue organized by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism involved key representatives from six prominent family businesses. This initiative aims to enhance collaboration within the nation’s evolving legislative framework. The discussion highlighted how the UAE's competitive structure supports the sustainability and growth of these enterprises across generations.

Notably, the introduction of the world's first Family Business Law—Federal Decree-Law No. 37 of 2022—marks a significant advancement. This law is supported by four ministerial resolutions that have established the Unified Family Business Register, a framework for Family Charters, guidelines for share buyback, and provisions for diversified share categories. As of now, the Unified Register has onboarded 18 businesses, providing services such as registration, certificate issuance, and charter deposits.

The dialogue also addressed challenges faced by these family-owned firms, particularly intergenerational conflicts that can hinder development. The legal framework provided by Federal Decree-Law No. 37 of 2022 clarifies governance and ownership aspects, facilitating smoother transitions and promoting long-term stability.

Additionally, the discussion revealed opportunities for family businesses to diversify into emerging sectors, enhancing investment prospects and reinforcing their crucial role in shaping the economic landscape of the UAE. With robust regulations and a coherent vision, the UAE is committed to strengthening family-owned enterprises as essential elements of the nation’s prosperity.
